Voice Lessons
Young Vocalists (Ages 6-10)
These young beginners are very early on in their vocal development. For this reason we will keep our vocal study simple by focusing on posture, breathing, and other simple vocal techniques during our exercises. These concepts will be applied to a variety of vocal music, mainly popular tunes. We can also work on performance and presentation if that is of personal interest. Part of our time will be spent singing and part of our time will be spent working on musical skills like reading music, this will include a little time at the piano.
Developing Vocalists (Ages 11-15)
At this stage in development they’re still not ready for advanced vocal technique. We will work on posture, breathing, and sealing your soft palate, among other things. We will spend time doing vocal exercises in which we can work on mastering these concepts. We will also pick out songs to prepare in which we can apply them. The student has input in the music they learn, I have worked with students on musical theater, songs from movies, contemporary music, and classical music. If they are interested in learning a classical song in French, German, or Italian that is also an option. If they’re not comfortable reading notes and rhythms we will also work on that skill.
Maturing Vocalists (Ages 16+)
We will work on all aspects of healthy vocal technique: lowering your larynx, sealing your soft palate, clean adduction, open throat, relaxed laryngeal muscles, balanced breathing, and more. We will work on a variety of repertoire, including songs that are of personal interest to the student. If the student is interested we can even work on foreign language pieces that are in French, German, or Italian. We will spend part of our time warming up and working on technique through the use of vocalises tailored to the specific needs of the student. The other part of the time will spend applying those technical skills to repertoire. If reading notes and rhythms are not something the student is comfortable with then we will work on that as well.
